School Is Never Out For The Pro by Bob Bly
Some time ago, I casually mentioned in my e-newsletter that I was taking a writing course.
One of my readers, JN, was absolutely shocked.
"YOU are taking a WRITING course?" she asked incredulously.
The
implication was given that I have been a writer for over 3 decades, my
taking a writing course is either frivolous or silly—a waste of time and
money.
JN could not be more wrong.
"School is never out for the professional," I answered concisely.
It's
my observation that folks who are really at the top of their field are
constantly reading, studying, learning, and attending lectures in their
specialty.
Why? To raise their mastery and skill to an even higher level.
On
the other hand, those who are at the bottom seem to feel they learned
everything they need to know at college, trade school, or on the job.
And they exhibit little or no desire to spend more time learning it better.
To me, this attitude seems lazy and counter-productive at best and dangerous at worst.
Can you imagine going to a doctor who didn't keep up with the latest medical research?
Of course not.
So why is the idea of a writer taking a writing class so surprising?
JN's
reaction reminds me of an American Society of Journalists and Authors
(ASJA) weekend writing conference I attended many years ago.
The person sitting next to me and I were both studying the curriculum in our conference brochures.
"This looks good," I said, pointing to a page, "a session on how to write book proposals."
She sniffed haughtily.
"I
wouldn't need to go to THAT," she said in a snobby, superior tone. "I
am ALREADY an author and I have written a published book."
At the time, I had written 30 published books. But I didn't tell her that.
Instead, I just went to the session. And I learned a lot—enough to sell 50 more books since then (and counting).
Maybe
JN thought that, seeing as I presumably know how to write, I would be
better off taking a course in flower arranging or bookkeeping or
PowerPoint.
But as busy adults, you and I have extremely limited time. We can take only so many courses.
And you will get a far better return on your investment in education by taking courses in things you are already good at—your strengths—rather than areas in which you are weak.
Why?
Your strengths are what make you successful.
The other stuff doesn't much matter.
In
his book "Strength Finders" (Gallup Press), Tim Rath writes: "People
have several times more potential for growth when they invest energy in
developing their strengths instead of correcting their deficiencies."
Yet,
notes Rath, 77% of parents think that a student's lowest grades deserve
more time and attention than the subjects the student is best at.
Think
about it this way; in a horse race, the winning horse can earn tens of
thousands of dollars more than the horse that "places" or "shows" (comes
in #2 or #3).
Yet often, especially in major races, the first-place horse beats the second-place horse by only a fraction of a second.
Therefore,
if the horse and jockey make a massive effort to improve in speed, and
beat their previous time by only a second or two, they can win instead
of place or show—and make the owner and jockey a lot richer.
On
the other hand, a racing horse is a lot less powerful, and can pull a
lot less weight, than a Clydesdale—those humongous horses that pull the
Budweiser beerwagon.
If you strength-trained the racehorse for years, it could probably get stronger.
But it would never get even close to the Clydesdale in strength...and it wouldn't earn a dime more on the track.
Many things about success are counter-intuitive, and the notion of training is one of the most counter-intuitive of all.
Most
people, when they see classes being offered, gravitate toward classes
on subjects they are weak in, hoping to improve their skill level from
minimal to acceptable, or learning something new.
For instance, I am not an expert in search engine marketing, which is a hot topic in Internet marketing.
So
to correct the defect, I signed up for the Direct Marketing
Association's Certificate Program in Search Engine Marketing (SEM).
I took the class and learned a lot about search engine marketing—useful for me as a copywriter.
But I have also learned something else...
Namely,
that no matter how much I study search engine marketing, I will never
know more than a small fraction of what the top gurus—like the ones who
wrote the DMA program—know about search engines.
So does that mean I gave up learning SEM...and did not optimize my website?
No. I am still learning SEM. And my website was optimized. But not by me.
Instead, I did something a lot smarter than trying to do it myself.
I
went out and found a top SEO consultant, who (with my assistant's help)
optimized the site for me (although I DID write the copy).
As you can tell, I am a big believer in specialization and the hiring of specialists.
There is so much to know, no one can know it all. And trying to do so is futile.
As Thomas Edison once said, we don't know one-millionth of 1% about anything.
Given
the overwhelming amount of information in the world today, and our
increasingly limited time to master it, I am convinced that we get the
best ROI on learning and training by focusing on our strengths and
learning to do what we do well even better.
I have found that, with rare exception, most people are only really good at one thing.
In
particular, I am wary of professionals with hyphenated expertise (e.g.,
writer-designer, illustrator-photographer); I find that these folks are
usually good at only one of the two designations—and usually mediocre
at the other.
I also agree with the late direct mail consultant
Dick Benson, who said: "Do what you do best in-house; buy everything
else outside."

Double Your Business by Bob Proctor
Have you ever heard that once your mind has been expanded by a big idea it will never go back to its original state? I like that thought, and truly believe it.
For some strange reason, most individuals mentally fool around with a small idea when they begin to think of increasing their business. It is 5 to 10 or 15% if they even give consideration to an increase. I want to suggest that you begin to think of doubling your business. That's right. Doubling it.
If you are the chairman of Exxon or some other multi-national corporation the idea is probably ridiculous. However, odds are, you are not in that position. Even if you are, you can double your effectiveness.
Think with me for a moment. We both know that it takes no more energy to work on a big idea than it does to work on a small one, so you can proceed assured that this type of mental activity will not give you a brain hernia. I want you to take a sheet of paper and put a figure at the top that will represent twice the business you are presently doing. If you are in a position where your effectiveness is not measured in dollars, write down what you would be doing when you are twice as effective.
Then write the words "How can I?"
When you begin to think about this, ideas will probably begin flying into your mind explaining why you can't and why it isn't possible. They will, in all probability, be valid, but counter-productive. Forget them. Tell yourself you have nowhere to write them.
Keep thinking.
After a while positive ideas will begin to flow. Write all of them on your paper, even the ridiculous ones.
These positive ideas will prime your pump for better ideas. Al Spizzirri, a friend of mine in Toronto took his income from $18,000 a year to $500,000 in two short years with this very concept, and I have NO doubt that you can do even better than that—if you choose to.
My company expanded across Canada into all of the U.S.A., Australia, New Zealand and around the world with this simple exercise.
Double your business—it's an exciting idea.

Move In The Other Direction by Bob Proctor
30 years ago I had the good fortune of listening to a recorded message by the late Earl Nightingale. He taught me many valuable lessons. Earl's philosophy changed the course of my life.
I recall one in particular which stands out in my mind: "If you travel in the opposite direction to the masses, you will probably never make another mistake."
That was good advice. It seems incredible that people in such large numbers can be wrong, but they are. Historically, they always have been.
Here is an excellent example. Generally speaking, first-time home buyers are young. Young people are frequently influenced by older relatives, friends and neighbours.
In Toronto real estate sales are down—way down. There are not many people purchasing real estate. If a young person or couple is thinking of buying their first home, the odds are pretty good the advice they would get from their seniors would be, "Don't buy now—this is not a good market, not many people are buying."
That is precisely why you should buy. Sales are down, that's correct...but, so are prices. If you're listening to advice from the masses you will always be in the same financial shape they are in.
Don't wait for another boom in the market when everyone is buying...that is when the prices are up. Now is an excellent time to buy a home, the market is low. Then, sell when it's high.
The masses have that equation reversed. That's why they are not winning. This applies to almost everything people do. Try going to lunch at an off hour, the restaurant will be empty and the service great.

Attitude Is The Key To Life by Bob Proctor
Victor Frankl once wrote, "Everything can be taken from a person but one thing: the last of human freedoms—to choose one's attitudes in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." Frankl was right. Attitude is a choice. You could be faced with a thousand problems, many or most over which you have absolutely no control. However, there is always one thing you are in complete and absolute control of and that is your own attitude.
When you surrender control of your attitude to what appears to be a negative situation, you will react to that situation. More often than not, reacting is inappropriate. On the other hand, if you were to remain objective, you would respond to the situation appropriately, thereby creating a winning situation.
If attitude is such an important word, why do so few people understand it? To be honest, it wasn't until I was in my late 20s when I finally understood its full impact. All through my teens and into my early adult life, I can't tell you the number of times that I heard, "Bob, if you'd just change your attitude, you would do a lot better." In retrospect I can easily see the cause of my problem. I didn't know what attitude was, let alone know how to change it!
Attitude is the composite of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Your conscious mind controls feeling and ultimately dictates whether your feelings will be positive or negative by your choice of thoughts, then your body displays those choices through action and behavior.
Attitude is actually a creative cycle that begins with your choice of thoughts. You do choose your thoughts and that choice is where your attitude originates. As you internalize ideas or become emotionally involved with your thoughts, you create the second stage in forming an attitude; you move your entire being—mind and body—into a new "vibration". Your conscious awareness of this vibration is referred to as "feeling". Your feelings are then expressed in actions or behaviors that produce the various results in your life.
Positive results are always the effect of a positive attitude. Attitude and results are inseparable. They follow one another like night follows day. What I mean by that is: one is the cause, the other, the result. There is a term we use to distinguish this "cause and effect" relationship, it is called The Law of Cause and Effect. Simply stated, if you think in negative terms, you will get negative results; if you think in positive terms you will achieve positive results. Ralph Waldo Emerson reiterated that same point when he said, "A person is what they think about all day long." The results you achieve in life are nothing more than an expression of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Take a close look at your life and evaluate the results you are achieving in various areas. See if you are able to relate your attitude to your results.
Winning and losing are opposite sides of the same coin—and that coin is attitude. There are many things wrong in this world; unfortunately that is all some people are able to see. Those who view the world in this light are often unhappy and somewhat cynical. Usually, their life is one of lack and limitation and it almost appears as if they move from one bad experience to another. I know people who are like this and I'm certain you do as well. It would appear as if they were born with a streak of bad luck and it has followed them around their whole life. These individuals are quick to blame circumstances or other people for their problems, rather than accepting responsibility for their life and their attitude.
Conversely, there are others who are forever winning and living the good life. They are the real movers and shakers who make things happen. They seem to go from one major accomplishment to another. They're in control of their life; they know where they are going and know they will get there. They are the real winners in life and their wins are a matter of choice.
You can experience that kind of life as well, you only need to decide. Making that simple decision is the first step to a new life. Dorothea Brand once said, "Act as if it were impossible to fail," and I challenge you to do so. By simply becoming aware that you can choose your thoughts each and every day, you will change your entire outlook. You have the power to choose an abundant life no matter your circumstances. That active choice will allow other positive people and opportunities to be attracted into your life. Don't wait to experience all the wonderful things the universe has in store for you. Start today by working on your attitude and welcome the abundant life that you were meant to lead.

Dig A Little Deeper
There's a story about the California gold rush that tells of two brothers who sold all they had and went prospecting for gold. They discovered a vein of the shining ore, staked a claim, and proceeded to get down to the serious business of getting the gold ore out of the mine. All went well at first, but then a strange thing happened. The vein of gold ore disappeared! They had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer there. The brothers continued to pick away, but without success. Finally, they gave up in disgust.
They sold their equipment and claim rights for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Now the man who bought the claim hired an engineer to examine the rock strata of the mine. The engineer advised him to continue digging in the same spot where the former owners had left off. And three feet deeper, the new owner struck gold.
A little more persistence and the two brothers would have been millionaires themselves. That's gold in you too. Do you need to dig 3 feet farther?
"Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." - Thomas A. Edison

The One Thing You Need To Be Good At by Bob Bly
The other day, my oldest son expressed to me his concern that he would not be successful as an adult.
Why not? Because (in his mind) there are quite a number of things he isn't good at (math is at the top of the list).
I shared with him an encouraging success secret that I now pass on to you.
Namely, that to be extremely successful—in business, career, and wealth building—you don't have to be good at a lot of things.
In fact, you can attain an extremely high level of success even if you are really good at only one thing.
Warren Buffett made this point some years ago in a college lecture he gave with Bill Gates.
He said, in essence, that he (Buffett) is not very strong, not very fast, not very physical, not very athletic.
"If I was dropped in the middle of Africa, I'd be eaten by a lion within 2 minutes," he told the audience.
However, because he is good at only one thing—investing in the stock market—Buffett is an extremely wealthy man.
In my neighborhood, parents worry incessantly about whether their kids will be successful.
They fret over the kids' grades...piano lessons...sports...extra-curricular activities...even how many friends the kids have...summer camp...you name it.
My kids have it easy, because I don't worry about any of these things.
As long as they do their best, I don't obsess over their grades or what extra-curricular activities they should be doing but are not.
I tell them what I just told you...
Find the one thing in life that you love—that turns you on, that you are passionate about—and keep doing it.
The more you do it, the better you get at it.
With an early start and years of practice, your kids will get good at the one thing they love, become extremely competent, and therefore never have to worry about supporting themselves or being out of a job.
Of course, to ensure financial success, this "one thing"—the singular passion—must be something others will pay money for.
To paraphrase Aristotle, "Where your passions intersect with the needs of the public, therein lies your vocation."
Like Warren Buffett, I have very few talents and am not good at most things.
The list of what I am mediocre or bad at is very long indeed.
I'm incompetent at fixing things around the house, for example.
And I have a depth-perception problem that makes me lousy at tennis, baseball, or any sport where you have to hit a ball with a stick.
But I was always a voracious reader. I love books, reading, and writing. I began to write early—amateur comic books in elementary school, short stories in junior high school, articles for the papers in high school and college.
I spent so much time in college writing for our paper—it was a daily, and I became the features editor—that my writing began to improve significantly.
I realized writing was the one thing I love to do, have an aptitude for, and am good at.
And in copywriting, I found an area of writing where I could be paid handsomely for my efforts.
A mistake many people make is to continually work to improve themselves in areas where they are weak.
What you should do instead is to improve yourself in the one area where you are strongest.
Why?
Today we are a society of specialists.
When I was a kid, and the tiles in our bathroom began to crumble, my dad strapped on a tool belt and fixed them.
Today when my bathroom has a cracked tile, I call the tile guy—and pay him to fix it.
Success does not come from being a jack of all trades, and a master of none.
It comes from mastery of a skill or body of knowledge that others—an employer or customer—will pay you to share.
If I were to take a course in tiling, I would learn a little...but my abilities would be nothing compared to my tile guy, who has been doing this for 40 years.
I spend my time increasing my knowledge of marketing, which helps me make more money in my freelance copywriting and Internet marketing business.
Society admires the Renaissance man, the well-rounded individual.
But more often than not, it's the singularly focused individual—Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Tiger Woods—the person who is exceedingly good at just one thing—who reaps the greatest rewards.

How to feel even more amazing with less sleep
Have you ever thought you need more than 24 hours in your day?
Well I believe I have found a way...
No! Not to get more than 24 hours in a day :) but how to make more time for yourself:
Actually, it's fairly straightforward...
Just get less sleep.
Honestly. My friend, who wrote this guide, has 2 kids, a full-time job, works part-time as a writer, has a great family and social life and still manages to feel amazing every day.
When I first heard him speaking about this, I thought there is no way that is true. When I asked him about it, he told me how he does it, and he didn't really think it was unusual as he has been doing it for years...
But when I questioned further he had to teach himself how to do it and now he has written a guide on how you can do it.
Imagine having an extra 2-4 hours every day....
What would you do with that time?
How much more could you achieve?
More time with your family...
More time to work on your goals in life...
More time to finish work on time...
More time to write that book....
The possibilities are virtually endless.
Read, my friend, Steven's story here.
I honestly think you'll be amazed and excited by the opportunities this can give you in life.

9 Action Traits Of A Good Leader
Dale Carnegie believed that being a good leader meant changing the attitudes and behaviors of those under your command. He broke it down this way:
1) Begin with praise and honest appreciation.
2) Call attention to people's mistakes indirectly
3) Talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person.
4) Ask questions instead of giving direct orders.
5) Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers.
6) Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be "hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise".
7) Give the other person a fine reputation to live up to.
8) Use encouragement. Make the fault seem easy to correct.
9) Make the other person happy about doing the thing you suggest.

Changing Your Habits by Renee Corbett
We all have goals. Yet sometimes it seems no matter how many times we write them down, no matter how many times we visualize the goal, we still never seem to make any progress.
Why?
It could be as simple as changing your habits. The reason is simple but we all know that changing habits can be very difficult. Here are some tips to help change bad habits and create new ones.
Let's talk about your brain.
In the last 20 years many studies have been done on the brain, and the results have been incredible.
Many studies talk about the conscious and the unconscious brain. According to the book, The Answer, "The conscious brain is the part of the brain that thinks and reasons, the part through which you exercise your free will" and the unconscious brain "is where the great bulk of perception happens: it is where your habits reside, where your accomplishments and achievements take root."
What I glean from that is that habits happen unconsciously, you just do them because that is what you have been doing for a long time. Have you ever completed a task and then thought how did that get done? It just happens because your brain is used to doing that task or habit daily.
What does this mean for you and for you wanting to get rid of some old habits or create new ones? It means you have to beware of your brain. Your brain remembers the way you have done things for a very long time. To change the habit, you must be consciously aware of the old way of doing things, and the new way you want to do things.
Be Consciously Aware
Let's take an example. If you decide you need to make sure you get 7 hours of sleep each night, you consciously need to make the effort to go to bed at 11:00 PM if you have to be up at 6:00 AM. If you do not think about this habit you want to achieve, your brain will let the old sleep patterns take over. It takes your brain anywhere from 27 to 31 days to adapt to a new habit.
At the very least for the next 4 weeks you will need to tell yourself to go to bed at 11 pm. After awhile this will become an unconscious and natural habit that your brain will adapt and just tell your body at 11 pm, "We are tired and need to go to bed."
Changing habits is no easy task. It takes thought, effort and perseverance. For instance, when I worked for a computer retailer, I was expected to check my e-mail every hour, on the hour, for the latest communications from corporate. I worked there for 5 years, so when I left there it was the hardest habit to break. Checking my Yahoo! e-mail account once an hour was taking me away from what I needed to be focused on.
The very strange part is that I felt like something was missing if I did not check the e-mail; I felt like I was going to get in trouble for missing a very important email. I had to retrain my brain that it was no longer required and that it was a very bad habit. No one needs to look at e-mail once an hour, but it took a good 30 days for my brain to get it. So you see, consciously I got it, but it took my unconscious brain a lot longer to completely understand.
Write It Down
We may have the best intentions, we know we can achieve these goals; we write them down on paper or a "to do" list. We write it down and then continue to live this day like we did yesterday. To make this goal more real, you need to see it all day long. You need to physically be able to look at the goal throughout the day. Then you need to begin to take action on that goal everyday. This is where you need to retrain your brain.
When you are looking at the goal every day and taking steps toward the goal, your brain begins to see the pattern. The unconscious brain finally gets it, this is the direction you are now moving in.
Here's the simple thing you should do right now. Write down the goal you want to achieve in the next year. Then begin taking action. You will be amazed at your brain and its power in helping you to achieve your goals and dreams.
In summary, changing your habits for more productivity is easier than you realize. All you need to do is:
- Retrain your brain
- Be aware of what you are doing
- Write down your goals

7 Ways To Make Meetings More Productive
1 - Start on time. Give warning; then do it.
2 - Assign time-keeping and minutes responsibilities.
3 - Keep posted on the time remaining and the amount behind schedule if any.
4 - Start with and stick to the agenda.
5 - Allow interruptions for emergency purposes only.
6 - Restate conclusions and assignments to ensure agreement.
7 - End on time.

The 25-50-25 Rule For Success by Bob Bly
"I was quite eager to learn about marketing and began reading everything associated with it," one of my subscribers, KM, told me in a recent e-mail.
"However, with all that's published on marketing online today, I find myself reading more than applying.
"How do I separate the worthy reading, that which would benefit my business, from the interesting but time-consuming reading that is of little practical value?
"Sometimes I force myself to read almost everything, fearful I may overlook some exceptional information or nugget. Help! Where do I stop?"
I hear this story all the time...
You are interested in something—whether it is copywriting, Internet marketing, whatever.
But you are overwhelmed by all the information being offered on the subject (after all, we live in the Information Age).
So you go "information crazy"...buying every course, attending every conference, reading every e-book, listening to every audio CD, and dialing into every webinar you can find.
Before you know it, a month...6 months...or a year has gone by—and you are no closer to your business or career goal.
That's because you've spent all your time reading, studying, and learning the thing you are interested in—rather than actually DOING it.
Sadly, you are suffering from a syndrome I call "analysis paralysis".
All the information you are taking in has overloaded your circuits.
You can't process it all, sort through it, and figure out what to do first.
So instead, you do nothing. You take no action—other than to order yet another course or report to read.
You have become a marketing information junkie—avoiding the harsh realities of the business world by retreating to your favorite comfy chair with yet another neat marketing book.
You spend all your time READING about starting a business. So there is no time left to actually start or run a business.
You are an "armchair entrepreneur"—more enamored with the idea of entrepreneurship than the actuality.
Fortunately there is an easy solution: the 25-50-25 rule. It provides a simple guideline to help you get unstuck.
It says there are only three ways to learn a process (e.g. starting an Internet business) or a skill (e.g., copywriting): studying, observing, and doing.
Are you spending too much time studying and reading about Internet marketing or freelancing—and not enough time actually doing it and getting your business off the ground? Then apply the 25-50-25 rule.
The 25-50-25 rule says that to master a skill or process, and put what you learn into practical action, you must divide your time as follows:
>> No more than 25% of your time is spent studying i.e. reading books, going to boot camps, attending workshops, listening to CDs in your car.
>> No more than 25% of your time is spent observing—watching what successful people in your field are already doing; e.g., if you want to become a direct mail copywriter, this means reading and analyzing the direct mail you get in your mail box each day.
>> At least 50% of your time is spent actually DOING the thing you are studying and observing e.g. if you want to sell information products on the Internet, you are creating your first product...designing your website...or building your list.
The idea is similar to Michael Masterson's notion of "ready, fire, aim". He says that you should take action right away, and then learn as you go.
Acquiring business knowledge is a worthwhile activity. But without action, that knowledge is worthless to you.
KM's worry that, by not reading everything, he may miss a 'nugget' of information is accurate: you will never know everything there is to know in your field, or even most of what there is to know in your field.
But so what?
You don't have to know everything—or even most of what there is to know—to succeed in most endeavors.
For example, there are hundreds of strategies for making money on the Internet.
But you can make a six-figure annual income online using only a handful of them, even if you never bother to learn the others.
In freelance copywriting, there are many top writers who only write one type of promotion. Or work in one narrow niche. And they make a fortune doing so.
When we were kids, our parents and teachers told us to study, study, study.
But I see many people today much more enamored with studying marketing and reading about business, marketing, writing, and entrepreneurship than actually doing.
Well, I understand that. Reading about marketing is fascinating and fun.
But the money is in the doing, not the reading.
Follow the 25-50-25 rule, and you'll be doing—and making money—at least half the time.

The More You Learn, The More You Earn by Bob Bly
Years ago, a famous rock star—I recall it being either Madonna or Cyndi Lauper—returned to her high school to speak at an assembly.
Although she had not graduated, she told the kids: Stay in school.
"The more you learn, the more you earn," she said.
Nowhere is this truer than in the business world.
Your success is likely to be directly proportional to the amount of knowledge you possess.
Knowledge about your products, technology, market and your profession, i.e. copywriting, website design, engineering.
Yet, even though we live in a knowledge-based economy, most of us graduate school knowing relatively little of what there is to know of the world—or even about our college major.
And with the dizzying pace at which new knowledge is created, the gap between what we know and what there is to know seems to grow exponentially with each passing day.
As Thomas Edison observed, "We don't know one millionth of one percent about anything."
Professor Richard Dawkins said in an interview with Scientific American magazine (7/07, p. 89): "All of us are ignorant of most of what there is to know."
So, with all of us knowing next to nothing, what can we do to learn—and thereby earn—more?
First, find a niche—an area of specialization—and concentrate your efforts within that niche.
The narrower the area of your specialization, the better your chances of at least keeping reasonably up to date in the field.
Second, become an "information junkie".
Read constantly.
I recommend every person seeking success in some area of business read:
1) The leading trade magazines in their industry.
2) A daily newspaper.
3) A weekly news magazine such as Newsweek, Time, or U.S. News & World Report.
4) One or two of the top e-newsletters or blogs covering your area of interest.
Third, read widely.
Even though you are a specialist, you need to acquire a solid base of knowledge outside your field.
Of course, your time is limited, so even here, you must choose your course of study carefully.
So what should you read and why?
MU, a Ph.D. candidate and consultant in the science of innovation, says that to be more innovative and creative you must read in "adjacent areas".
An adjacent area is something different from but at least peripherally related to your major field.
Example: a systems analyst might read in architecture, because both deal with designing systems (the former a computer application, the latter a building).
Why do you need to read in adjacent areas?
Research shows that the ability to be innovative is dependent on possessing a wide storehouse of knowledge from which ideas can be generated.
People who are not well read have a limited store of knowledge, and therefore are hampered in their ability to come up with new solutions.
Of course, reading is not the only way to learn. Doing things is equally or in some cases even more valuable as a learning tool.
According to an article in Prevention magazine (10/07, p. 175), new experiences—doing new things—stimulates production of dopamine, a chemical involved in learning and memory.
In addition, new experiences build brain mass and increase mental agility, while the absence of novelty causes the brain to shrink.
Solution: take up a new language, hobby, sport, musical instrument, or any other activity that offers continual fresh challenges.
When does all this learning stop?
Never.
"School is never out for the pro" is old advice and still true today.
You might protest: "But I am too busy putting out fires at work for all this study and learning!"
Then do it after hours.
In his book "212: The Extra Degree", S.L. Parker advises: "Add a few hours each month to your professional development outside of the work day."
By doing so, you can add the equivalent of a full week of work on your most valuable asset: you.

How to Focus in 3 Easy Steps: A Lesson in Theory of Constraints by Dr. Lisa Lang
If you're a "typical" Internet marketer you probably suffer from information overload! There are so many offers and opportunities that come your way...and many of them are GREAT!
On top of that, you're an entrepreneur...therefore you tend to come up with great ideas of your own.
Combine these two things together...and you probably suffer from what many other internet marketers suffer from. It's a disease known as "shiny penny syndrome". You may know the symptoms. Something sounds like a great opportunity so you sign up and start learning about it.
Then ANOTHER great opportunity comes up. So you buy the program, even though you're half way through the first program. You think you can do both at once. While running your current business.
And then a potential JV opportunity presents itself. And you're afraid if you let it go, this will be the "big thing" that you missed out on...so you jump on board.
And now you are juggling WAY too many things, and aren't productive at ANY of them. It's time to stop the madness!
People often ask me to summarize Theory of Constraints. And in one word, it's FOCUS. Buying more Internet Marketing products is NOT the answer!
The project that's going to make you the most money in the least amount of time is the first thing you should be focused on.
You Need a Process to Determine Where You Should Focus
How to focus in 3 easy steps:
1. Determine the revenue potential for each project.
This is an estimate, of course, since you haven't done the project yet. How much potential revenue do you think would result if you completed the project?
Include all income you will be collecting as a result of the project, even shipping.
Don't worry if you don't have perfect information. We just need a ballpark number or "close enough for hand grenades" number. And because you will have an estimate for each of your projects, we are just looking for them to be relative to each other.
2. Determine the cost to generate the revenue of each project.
Costs are those that you would incur as a result of the project. Example project costs:
- New hosting fees (don't count fees you are already paying);
- Other new recurring fees like email hosting, but again, don't count fees you are already paying;
- Sub-contracted help from rent-a-coder, freelancer, or some such outsourced labor. What part of the project will you be off-loading? You can look at bids on other similar projects to give you an idea of cost;
- Affiliate payments. What percent will your affiliates be getting?;
- Expert costs if you are paying a expert for their material;
- Material publications and shipping costs if you are selling physical products;
- And so on...
Do not include any costs that you are currently paying and will continue to pay whether you do the project or not.
3. Determine how much of YOUR time it will take to complete each project to start generating revenue.
"YOUR" is emphasized because we are not counting outsourced time. Outsourcing is a way to LEVERAGE your time.
Theory of Constraints has been getting some play in the Internet Marketing circles lately. And the reason is because it works.
You are the constraint of your business and this question is: How much of the constraint (YOUR time) will each project use?
The idea is to maximize the use of your constraint to generate the most income. So you can prioritize your projects based on the (Revenue - Costs)/Your Time.
Maximize the Use of Your Constraint (Your Time)!
The project that generates the highest Throughput (Revenue - Costs) per hour of your time should be your highest priority project—the one thing that you are focusing on.
Your constraint is the thing that limits your ability to make more money now as well as in the future.
I find that for most entrepreneurs, the constraint is their time and attention.
So for us to maximize our potential, we need to focus and work on those things that generate the most amount of Throughput for the least amount of our time and attention.
This also means that when you outsource, you are better leveraging the constraint (YOU). You are making money, but using less of your time and attention.
To the extent that you can outsource—do it!
We typically do this exercise and separate projects into 2 types—short term and long term. That's because the goal is to maximize profits now as well as in the future.
Then we typically select one short-term and one long-term project to work on.
This means that you have 2 projects you can work on, but that's it. We want to eliminate much of the multi-tasking your doing.
The key is to...Focus on Finishing!
It is far better to finish a project that will start generating income (or get you closer to that) than to start another project.
We generate no income when we start a project. We start generating income when we finish!
Now that you know which single project you should be focused on...
Do NOT work on or start any other projects until you finish that one project!
When you finish the short-term project (or it's not what you thought and your decide to stop), you can start another short-term project.
And when you finish the long-term project, you can start the next one.
How much is it worth to actually finish a project on your list?
It's common to find that some projects will return several THOUSAND dollars an hour for your time.
It's also common to find that you have prioritized incorrectly—that you are working on some things that you shouldn't be.
One client was beating himself up for not working on a book. Well when we did this analysis, we discovered that the book was NOT at the top of either the short term list or the long term list.
How much energy and attention do you spend beating yourself up or feeling guilty about what's not getting done?
What if the thing you feel guilty about should NOT be worked on right now? How could you better spend that energy and what results could you achieve?
What if you knew the one short-term and the one long-term project you should be focused on with your 10 hours per week?
Here's the point: You've spent a LONG time directing your time, money and attention to what you know. Now it's time to FOCUS. You know enough, for now.
How to Focus in 3 Easy Steps:
1. Determine the revenue potential for each project.
2. Determine the cost to generate the revenue of each project
3. Determine how much of YOUR time it will take to complete each project to start generating revenue.

Why are some people more successful than others?
A lot of people who claim to be rich and successful—and I say “claim” because we don’t know for a fact that they are—act as if it’s all them…and that luck had nothing to do with it.
But the fact is, there are 6 specific factors that contribute to anyone’s success or lack thereof—and luck is clearly one of them:
#1 – Intelligence.
Some people are just smarter than others.
Intelligence is a result of genetics and environment—your upbringing.
Since heredity and the home you are born into are determined purely by chance, intelligence is largely a matter of luck.
By the way, by “smart” I don’t mean “book smart”.
I mean smart at anything that can make money—whether it’s business, art, computers, or whatever.
#2 – Knowledge.
Successful people are students for life.
They are constantly acquiring specific knowledge in their business or field—as well as a large storehouse of knowledge on all sorts of other topics.
As a rule, the more you learn, the more you earn.
#3 – Effort.
The cliché about working smarter, not harder, is B.S.
Successful people work both smarter—and harder—than others.
#4 – Attitude.
Successful people have an attitude. But it’s not an attitude of ripping people off…or making as much money as they can any way they can.
It’s an attitude of service: of giving their customers (and others) more value than they have any right to expect.
Many successful people are also goal-oriented, and it is important to them to become successful. So they focus their efforts on achievement of that goal.
#5 – Aptitude.
We tend to be good at things we like and have an aptitude for.
Financially successful people just happen to have an aptitude and talent for things that make money.
Warren Buffett has said that the reason for his great wealth is that he was born with aptitudes and talents for which our society offers huge financial rewards.
Some of us are good at stuff, but not stuff that pays well. And if we pursue those interests exclusively, our incomes can be limited as a result.
#6 – Luck.
As you can see, the key success factors of intelligence (#1) and aptitudes (#5) are determined mainly by chance—and are largely beyond our control.
Yes, Warren Buffett studied finance, worked hard, and had the right attitude.
But he was also lucky, as is virtually every person who has achieved significant wealth, success, or accomplishment in life.
The honest ones admit this and are thankful.
Any rich or successful person who said luck had no part in his achievement is either in denial or unwilling to come clean.
Therefore, if you are successful, you should be humble, not arrogant and boastful.
After all, you were lucky. Right?

10 Ways To Attract Prospects Like A Magnet by Bob Bly
I recently re-listened to an absolutely great audio cassette program, "The 28 Principles of Attraction" written by the late Thomas Leonard and published by Nightingale-Conant.
The program presents success principles which, if applied diligently, will cause opportunities, success, and wealth to come to you, rather than you having to go out and look for it, says the author. Here are my top 10:
1. Recognize and tell the truth.
2. Market your talents shamelessly.
3. Develop more character than you need.
4. Unhook yourself from the future.
5. Add value just for the joy of it.
6. Thrive on the details.
7. Deliver twice what you promise.
8. Affect others profoundly.
9. Become unconditionally constructive.
10. Master your craft.

Simple Method For Increasing Appreciation And Gratefulness
This is very powerful and can be tremendously helpful for many people.
It can work wanders for people suffering from deep depression too someone that may have a "technically" good life but are still not as happy as they feel they should be or want to be and every one in between can get amazing results by doing this simple thing.
When I discovered this technique I was in a very bad way and suffering bouts of deep depression and often thought about suicide. This simple technique saved my life and my two sons from losing their one and only parent. Now I am very happy and so glad to be alive! I'm sure you can understand that this technique is very important to me and I hope it will help many other people too.
When I started doing this I thought it seemed stupid and I didn't think I would get anything out of it but I knew I had to do something so I gave it a try and the results where amazing! So please, give it a try for at least a week and see how much better and more fulfilled you feel. Then the longer you do it the better & better you will feel and the better & better you will know yourself.
Here it is: You will need some paper and something to write with. At the end of the day write down 5 things that happened that day that you are grateful for. For some it may simply be that you where still breathing when you woke up that morning and stuff like that. If that is the best you can come up with, then that is what you write down. It can also be something or someone that made you happy, made you smile...in some way, simply anything that you appreciated that day.
Again all you need to do is at the end of the day write down 5 things that happened that day that you are grateful for.
This is both very simple and very powerful. Do this at the end of every day and you will be surprised at the results. As you keep doing this it will get easier and easier and you will get happier and happier.
If you know anyone that could use some more happiness, appreciation or gratefulness in their life please forward this to them so they can enjoy the benefits too.

Why most marketers never achieve their goals and dreams...
In today's post, I'm going to talk about one of the main reasons why most marketers never achieve their goals and dreams.
I'm also going to give you a very specific formula you can use to start hitting more of your goals, and start achieving your dreams.
You see, I've always wondered why very few people make it in business, while many fail miserably...
The successful marketers get to live the dream lifestyle, travel, and spend most of their time with their loved ones...while those that don't succeed struggle just to make ends meet.
I've been fortunate enough to become friends with some of the most successful people in our industry, and I've picked up a lot of their keys to success.
It all starts with how they set their goals.
Did you know that "how" you set your goals has a lot to do with whether you achieve them or not?
It's true...
All the successful marketers in our industry set S.M.A.R.T goals, while the rest set regular goals.
In fact, EVERY successful person in the world (regardless of industry), sets S.M.A.R.T. goals.
S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for:
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time limited
If you want to achieve a goal, it must be:
1. Specific: A specific goal has a much greater chance of being accomplished than a general goal.
2. Measurable: You need to have some way of measuring your progress if you want to achieve your goal.
3. Achievable: A goal must be achievable. For example, setting a goal to break the 100m world record when you've never ran track is NOT achievable.
4. Realistic: A goal has to be realistic. For example, if you've not made your first sale yet, it's unrealistic for you to set a goal to become a millionaire in the next 3 months.
5. Time-limited: You need deadlines for all your goals. A goal without a deadline is only a wish.
Here are some examples of regular goals and their S.M.A.R.T counterparts:
I want to get in shape (regular goal).
I will lose 10 pounds in the next 10 weeks by working out 3 times every week (on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) and cutting out all junk food from my diet (S.M.A.R.T. goal).
I will fire my boss (regular goal).
I will fire my boss by December 31st 2012. I will do this by dedicating 4 hours every day after work to build my self-development business (S.M.A.R.T. goal).
Those are just a few examples, but I'm sure you get the point.
You can also break those goals into smaller sub-goals to make them more S.M.A.R.T.
Do this for every single goal you set from today and you will quickly see the results.

5 Tips For Improving Your People Skills
Improving your interpersonal skills is something that cannot happen overnight. The only way to improve is to practice and actually do it. Many of the skills may take time for you to adopt, however there are also some quick little techniques that can start to make things easier almost immediately.
1) Stay professional. Remember no matter whom you're talking to make sure you are at your best. The way you act reflects on your character. Learn to deal with situations in an appropriate way.
2) Establish credibility. Be sincere, if you are truthful and upfront with people it will go a long way to gaining others' respect and trust.
3) Understand others' point of view. Remember to reflect on what others tell you, even if you disagree take the time to learn and understand where they are coming from.
4) Learn about others. Take time talk with employees or clients. Conversations do not need to be work related, rather simple conversations that help you learn about the person and build rapport.
5) Be confidant. Keep eye contact and your body relaxed. Be sure to speak clearly and at a moderate pace.

YOU Are Amazing and YOU Will Succeed, IF... by Richard Bravo
IF ...
You fill your mind, your heart and soul with positivity.
IF ...
You encourage and empower others in their journey—where ever they are going.
And most of all, IF ...
You believe in yourself and shrug the bombardment of negativity surrounding you.
You clicked to read this for a reason. My guess is because deep down inside you're sick of all the negative news and drama. Deep down in your core, your heart, your mind and your soul, you are looking for the truth; a better way.
You want to be loved and accepted.
You want to be successful and happy.
You want to live a purpose filled, fulfilling life.
You want to know that your time here counted for something.
And you want to be part of something meaningful.
You see, there is a war being waged—a war against your mind. And some would have you believe that the only way to succeed is by joining the herd and playing off people's emotions by using negative messages to scare people into taking action. That only way to get people's attention is to foster fear and pain of loss.
But what have you really accomplished by doing that? Have you really helped anyone or simply sold them something? Go for the conversion.
Have you truly helped them find a solution to their problem OR just set them up for repeat purchases.
Do YOU really truly feel fulfilled by fueling fear and inciting negative thoughts in people's psychology?
People do respond to fear and loss and drama and negative news. CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc., may draw an audience with fear and negativity. But is that the audience you want to draw into your business and life? Do YOU really aspire to be part of the machine perpetuating it?
What kind of life is that creating? Are you truly happy? Is that the legacy you want to pass on?
There's a great line from the film Gladiator: "What you do in this life echoes in eternity."
How do you want people to remember you?
How do you want people to speak of you when they mention your name?
Don't be the "Me Too" marketer that feeds on negativity. It takes authenticity and courage to be creative, go against the norm and bring something different to the marketplace.
BE ... Inspiring
BE ... Empowering
BE ... Encouraging
BE ... Passionate
BE ... Positive
BE ... Purposeful
BE ... Fulfilling
But most of all, above all else, Love people.
Truly strive to better your fellow man.
The saying is true, it does echo through eternity..."The greatest of these is love." (famous RED LETTERS)
You Are Amazing!
You Have the Power to Succeed!
You Are a Winner!
Live with passion and vigor and love people and you will be successful beyond your wildest dreams!
If you resonate with this message, Pass It On.
Live Long & Prosper.

5 Tips For Public Speaking
The thought of giving a speech can seem daunting, but I assure you it won't be if you are prepared. People do not expect you to be perfect, but they want a speech to be honest, easy to comprehend, and delivered clearly and concisely. Here are some tips to help you achieve this:
1. Be simple. It is best to use a simple outline. You'll want an introduction, main points with supporting details and a conclusion. Avoid complex language and try to keep it as simple as possible.
2. Add details. By having a simple structure, you can bring in details to make your speech interesting. Use variety when compiling information (e.g. personal anecdotes, newspaper, media quotes, statistical studies, examples, fun definitions). If you want to add style, try repetition, word play or rhetorical questions.
3. Know your audience. Why are these people coming to hear you speak? What do they want or need from this speech? Put yourself in their shoes. Are they learning about this subject for the first time or peers who already understand the basics of the subject? Think about these things and then write your speech accordingly.
4. Beating nervousness. First of all, it is imperative that you know your audience. This will wipe out any fear of not knowing what to say. If you are over-prepared you will automatically be less nervous. Also, know what your opening line is to help take away the anxiety of getting started. Lastly, practice, practice, practice! If you have already given your speech several times, it won't feel like the first time.
5. Body language. Be sure to stand tall, smile, and avoid lots of body movements. Too much motion can distract the audience. Keep your hands and arms in an open position because you will look more confident. Finally, talk slowly and remember to breathe!

Attributes Of Successful People
Success of some kind is something that most of us aspire to accomplish. Many people have a hard time of it and don't understand why. In this article you will find out the attributes most often found in successful people so you can do these things too and enjoy the benefits for yourself. One thing you do need to understand is that most people that have success, have earned it. Yes, earned it. They deserve their success because they have worked hard for it. If success was easy everyone would have it. Are you willing to do what it takes? Read this article and then decide if truly being successful is right for you.
In life successful people are driven to accomplish their goals. Whether you're looking to heal a relationship, get a new job/ start a new business, lose weight, find inner peace...consider these characteristics, which are common to people who succeed.
1) Vision: Successful people get what they want because they know what they want. They have a vision that keeps them motivated and efficiently on track. They see it, feel it, and experience it in their minds and hearts. What do you want to achieve? How would that affect your life? How would it feel to have succeeded in accomplishing your goal? You need to know what it feels and looks like to get there. You MUST know what you're going for.
2) Strategy: People who consistently win have a clear and thoughtful strategy. You must make a thorough plan of what you need to do and when you need to do it. You need to write it down and stay on course. Avoid any alternative that does not get you closer to the finish line.
3) Passion: Are you excited to get up in the morning? People with a passion are, and they're energized about what they are doing. You need to live and breathe what it is that you want, and be passionately invested in both the journey and the goal.
4) Truth: People who consistently win have no room in their lives for denial, fantasy or fiction. They are self-critical rather than self-deluding, and they hold themselves to high but realistic standards. They deal with the truth, since they recognize that nothing else will make their vision obtainable.
5) Flexibility: Life is not a success-only journey. Even the best-laid plans sometimes must be altered and changed. Be open to input but think it through and consider potentially viable alternatives. Be willing to be wrong and be willing to make corrections. Sometimes you need to take some steps backwards or even start over to make corrections that get you better to success.
6) Risk: People who consistently win are willing to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. Be willing to plunge into the unknown if necessary, and leave behind the safe, unchallenging, and familiar existence in order to have more.
7) People around you: Surround yourself with a group of people who want you to succeed. They will move with you toward your goal. Choose and bond with people who have skills, talents and abilities that you do not. Winners give and receive by being part of other people's groups.
8) Action: Do it! People who succeed don't just sit and think about what they want to do. They take meaningful, purposeful, directional action consistently and persistently. Every step they take puts them toward the outcome they're looking for. Action, action, action! As much action as you can. Do, do, do. This can even mean skipping some TV time!
9) Priorities: People who consistently succeed manage their challenges by priorities. Commit to managing your time in such a way that does not allow you to spend time grinding along on priority numbers two or three if priority number one needs your attention and action.
10) Self-management: People who consistently succeed consciously take very good care of themselves. They are the most important resource they have in achieving their goals. They actively manage their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. It is very important to take good care of yourself.
11) A controlled environment: It is vital that all the things and spaces around you are kept up, clean and organized! It is both mentally and spiritually soothing to be in an environment that is under control but most importantly order and disorder have a very strong psychological, mostly subconscious effect on us. Everyone has a certain amount of mental capacity. That is how much of your mind can handle at one time. Why is this important to understand? Because every piece of your environment that is not kept up, dirty, disorganized, not the way you want it is basically not under control. Every bit of it, no matter how small or how big, takes up some of your attention (part of your mental capacity) either consciously or subconsciously or both. That means that you have less of your mental capacity to focused your attention on anything like making conclusions and decisions, be creative, have the energy you need to face the day and your goals. Some people are so out of control that they can barely have the energy to get out of bed in the morning not to mention actually taking on their day and goals with PASSION!
Many people have an environment that is to some degree out of control and getting in under control can be a daunting task. For some it may even seem practically imposable. Please do not worry, it is doable even for the moderately disorganized pack rat. There is some very good news here. You see, getting control has an accumulative effect on your life. That is that the more control you accomplish the better things go in your life. Here is a big secret about getting control; Getting control over the little, simple, easy-to-do things makes it easier to get control over the bigger stuff. So start with the small, quick, easy-to-do stuff and the momentum will keep up its pace. You can even get help from a friend or family member but only as long as they will just help and be supportive and NOT CRITICIZE OR PUT YOU DOWN! This can be difficult enough without having more negativity put in your head. It may help to show them this article so they understand what you are working on accomplishing and why. Do as much as you can every day while continuing to do your regular chores and you will see it get better and better and you may be very surprised what big difference it makes.

Jack Canfield Reveals His #1 Secret (Free Video)
I have an amazing video to share with you today but before I do let me just say that I have been amazed with how many amazing people have come out in support of EFT and Merdian Tapping over the last few years.
People like Dr. Joseph Mercola, Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Cheryl Richardson, Bruce Lipton, pretty much all of the best and brightest in the personal development world have said they support it.
As Bob Proctor says in the film The Tapping Solution "People are starting to understand themselves as an energy field. And the fact that they can work with it to get the results they want."
And these experts aren't just saying they support EFT, they're saying that they use it on a regular basis and have had results with it.
Which is why I want to share a video with you today with Jack Canfield, co-creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books and featured expert in the hit film "The Secret" where he talks specifically about EFT.
In this video Jack reveals some really eye opening insights as to why he thinks EFT is so critical to use, especially when working with the Law of Attraction.
He also explains how he has used EFT in his own life and how he recommends you use it to get exactly what you want in life.
This video is one of a series of videos being released leading up to the 2011 Tapping World Summit.
This is a huge online event that happens once a year that is not only the biggest yearly event in the EFT community but also one of the biggest and most popular events that happens in the entire personal development world.
Over 100,000 people attended this event online in 2010 and over 81,000 people attended in 2009. And this year...they’re expecting over 200,000 people!
This is definitely not a regular event. It's 100% content and the best part is...it's free.
Attending this event is one of the most life changing things a person can do for themselves...so I hope you decide to check it out.
It starts on the 21st of February so in the meantime, I suggest watching this great video with Jack Canfield.

No More Excuses! 4 easy exercises to zap your obstacles.
Everybody faces challenges in life.
Everybody has obstacles that hold them back.
But some people overcome their obstacles and achieve greatness. For instance:
* German composer, Ludwig Van Beethoven, went deaf at a young age—yet continued composing music and became one of the most famous and influential composers of all time
* Franklin D. Roosevelt contracted polio in 1921 and was forced to use a wheelchair—yet still became the president of the United States in 1933.
* New York Yankee pitcher, Jim Abbott, was born with only one hand—yet that didn't stop him from becoming a major league baseball pitcher. In fact, he pitched a no-hitter in 1993.
So the question is: How do you overcome the obstacles in your life so you, too, can achieve your dreams?
Igor Ledochowski, one of the world's leading personal development experts, has just released a new video called "How to Break Through Obstacles That Are Holding You Back".
The best part: This exclusive video is 100% freely available.
In this new video, Igor reveals:
* How one little problem—ignored for too long—can cause your entire life to fall to pieces.
* Why you should write down the obstacles you're currently facing.
* A simple question to ask yourself to get rid of irrational fears.
* How playing out "worst-case scenarios" in your mind can actually help you break through obstacles.
* How to guarantee people will accept you and what you have to offer. (Never feel the fear of rejection again.)
* Why being "good enough" is a better goal than being "good" or "great."
* How unrealistic expectations are holding you back...and...what to do about it.
* An easy "game" that lets you bend every situation to your ultimate benefit.
This video deserves your full attention. Go to this page to watch it now while its still available!

Your unlock key to abundance.
Do you know what you can learn from a 19th-century Russian pilgrim, a para-psychologist and a character from Franny and Zooey?
Simple changes you can make in your way of thinking to give yourself the permission to get most anything you want.
It's called the Simple Mind Method and takes only a few minutes to implement. Don't overlook this one.
